In my experience, the monologue is one of the hardest dramatic mediums to pull off. You’re up there all by yourself, you’ve only got 1 minute (or less), and somehow you’re supposed to convince an adjudicator that you’re exactly what she needs. For many of us, it takes more than a minute to just get past our auditioning nerves, let alone give an oscar-worthy performance. Well… tough luck, I guess. If we singers want to work in a dramatic field, we have to learn the art of the monologue with the same intention and integrity as we learn to sing. The following article is a great start for students working on their first monologue and a great reminder for those of us who need a little refresher of the basics:
